Montana Weather

The old saying in Montana is that if you don't like the weather, stick around an hour and it's bound to change.  That can really be true because the Big Sky really is big and weather systems move in and out of vast expanses.

Lost Horse

Blue skies sometime become full of black, angry clouds that deliver various amounts of precipitation.  Then there are certain areas that have less rain or snow yet the snow pack delivers great irrigation water where systems built over a century ago deliver much needed water to otherwise semi arid environments. That is the case of the Bitterroot Irrigation District which gathers it's water from Lake Como just below these beautiful peaks in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana.  Some 17,000 acres are irrigated using a canal system even though the Bitterroot is sometimes called the Banana Belt of Montana due to its mild climate.

This is an example of how different the weather can be just a short distance away.
